Science For All: A Statement of Commitment from the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences

As a community of scholars from a variety of disciplines, DIBS is committed to a policy of open access for everyone. We work for the good of all people. A sense of wonder about the mind is universal, and we invite everyone to participate in the excitement of discovery. Maintaining vigilance against all forms of discrimination and exclusion is essential for establishing an ethical foundation for the advancement of our science and society. We value the work, ideas, and social contributions of every member of our community.

We stand in solidarity with those who face discrimination, and we denounce unjust and inhumane actions against them. We will take the lead in educating ourselves, our students and trainees, and our colleagues about the biases that continue to afflict everyday interactions and interfere with academic and career advancement. We will work to counteract those biases and honor everyone’s life experiences.

Brain research is a field of inquiry that ranges from fundamental neuroscience to the treatment of motor and psychiatric disorders. A common theme in the field is the study of brain-behavior interactions. Learning about the mental processes that affect our actions, our sense of self, and our perception of others can illuminate profound and humbling aspects of our humanity. We aim to disseminate these discoveries so that all may benefit from more informed social interactions and a deeper understanding of the human experience.

DIBS recognizes and appreciates that all of its members are critical for achieving these goals. Through its example, DIBS hopes to demonstrate that values of inclusiveness benefit not only society, but also scientific and medical progress through the power of collaboration.
