450 'Excite Their Neurons' at DIBS Discovery Day

More than 400 children and adults of all ages attended the 2018 Discovery Day at the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences. Youngsters crowded around tables featuring preserved brains and brain slices, eager to touch an actual human brain. Others learned how to mimic emotions with the help of staff from the Duke Center for Autism and Brain Development. Graduate students helped people learn how the brain accommodates changes in vision, using special goggles and bean bags to throw at targets.

Four Fall '17 Neuroscience Classes Rated in Top 5% by Students

Four undergraduate Neuroscience courses taught in fall 2017 and their faculty have been rated by students as among the top 5 percent across the university, announced Dr. Arlie Petters, Duke’s Dean of Academic Affairs in the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences and Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education.

Alzheimer's Drug May Reverse Cognitive Changes in Young Binge-Drinkers

February 16, 2018

A drug used to slow cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease could offer clues on how drugs might one day be able to reverse brain changes that affect learning and memory in teens and young adults who binge drink.

In a study led by Duke Health and published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, scientists demonstrate in rats that a short duration of the drug donepezil can reverse both structural and genetic damage that bouts of alcohol use causes in neurons, or nerve cells, in the young brain.

Dr. Richard Bedlack works with patients facing the tough challenges of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gherig's Disease), but the Neurology associate professor and member of the DIBS Faculty Network doesn't let that impair his wacky sense of fashion. He was honored recently as Duke's Employee of the Week.
